During his speech at the United Nations climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to achieve a net zero emissions target for India by 2070.
Here are the main takeaways from Prime Minister Modi's presentation:
🔴 “In the middle of this world summit, I want to place five essences from India to overcome this challenge (of climate change). First, India will increase its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030. Second, India will meet 50% of its energy needs from renewable energy sources by 2030. Third, by by 2030, India will reduce its total projected carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes. Fourth, by 2030 India will reduce the carbon intensity of its economy by 45%. Fifth, India will achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2070. ”
“These five essences will be India's unprecedented contribution to climate action. "
🔴 “Today, the whole world recognizes that India is the only major economy in the world that has delivered on its Paris commitments both in letter and in spirit. We are making all possible efforts in a resolute manner. "
🔴 “The world agrees that lifestyle plays a very important role in climate change. I would like to suggest a one word movement in the context of climate that can become a key basis for a world. That word is LIFE - Lifestyle for Environment. It is necessary that we all come together as collective participants and advance the “environmental lifestyle” as a movement. It can become a mass movement for an environmentally friendly lifestyle. "
🔴 “We all know the truth that the promises made on climate finance so far have been empty. When we increase our ambitions on climate action, the global ambition on climate finance cannot remain the same as during the Paris agreement. Today, as India is committed to moving forward with new commitment and enthusiasm, at this time, climate finance and low-cost technology transfer become even more important.
🔴 “Today's need is conscious and deliberate use instead of senseless and destructive consumption. This movement (LIFE) can help us achieve goals that can bring about revolutionary change in various fields such as fishing, agriculture, welfare, food choices, packaging, tourism, clothing, water and energy management. Each of us individually will have to make conscious choices. The daily choices of millions of people around the world will take the fight against climate change a billion steps forward every day.
🔴 “As we constantly scrutinize the evolution of climate change, we must also monitor climate finance. Justice would be truly served if pressure was put on countries that failed to meet their climate finance commitments. "
🔴 “It wasn't India making promises, it was promises that 1.25 billion Indians made to themselves. I am happy that a developing country like India which strives to lift millions of people out of poverty, to work day and night to make life easy for millions of people and India which represents 17 percent of the world's population, but responsible for only five percent of global emissions, is this country that has spared no effort to fulfill its duty.
🔴 “More people travel on Indian railways each year than the entire population of the world. This massive rail system is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2030. This initiative alone will reduce carbon emissions by 60 million tonnes per year.
🔴 “India understands and shares the pain of other developing countries and has continued to voice its expectations. For many developing countries, climate change is a very big crisis looming before them, a crisis that threatens their very existence. Today, to save the world, we must take big steps. It is the urgency of the moment.
🔴 “When I first came to Paris for a climate summit, I came as a representative of a culture that conveyed the message 'Sarve Bhavantu Sukhina' (everyone should be happy). Therefore, the Paris event was not just a summit, but a feeling and a commitment. "
